GRAMOPHONE MAGAZINE COVER

GRAMOPHONE MAGAZINE COVER
I almost forgot to include this one!
I produced it a couple of months ago for the cover of Sony’s The Gramaphone magazine.
I was asked to turn a colour photograph of the modern composer John Williams into a traditional and old fashioned, marble bust and add him alongside two of the musical giants from history.
This provided a challenge, which I usually respond to.
First of all I desaturated the colour photograph and then began cutting, cropping and blending chunks of the image to give me a more straight-on view.
I then sourced various marble busts, took reference photographs and began carefully to capture textures and highlight information from these photographs and use them judiciously to alter the original photograph.
Then all that remained was to create a few bases in Form Z and add names below the set of three composers.

CHARACTERS FOR TOLLHOUSE COOKIES

CHARACTERS FOR TOLLHOUSE COOKIES
I was recently commissioned to create and illustrate eight holiday characters for the Nestlé Tollhouse cookie range by Sterling Brands in New York. So picking up my trusty pencil, before I even switched on a single pixel, I began to sketch out a few dozen variations of these eight, traditional holiday characters.
These were then scanned and emailed for approval to the 17th floor of the Empire State building – they wouldn’t pay the airfare for personal delivery!
It will be no surprise to learn that Photoshop was employed yet again to illustrate the final art.
They all seemed to be very well received but the Santa remains my favourite. I think I have now illustrated his cheerful face around 6 times or so for products such as electric cookers, pyramidal shaped chocolate bars, greetings cards, carpets and now American cookies! Maybe one day they should all have a roll call together.
These are the first four charcters plus a close up of Santa.
It was suggested that I might have a bit more ‘chat’ on my blog, so was that OK Julie?

SPLOBS TARGET GAME

SPLOBS TARGET GAME
The amazing Splobs game features six colourfully illustrated targets which you throw large lumps of goo at!
It’s a fun throw-and-splat game and was commissioned by Optical Design.
The artwork features Robots, Frogs, Snotty Aliens, Fish, Bugs and a Crazy Band.
Initial sketches were provided by fellow illustrator Gary Swift (garyswift.com) as I was hampered at the time by having my arm in a sling. (broken collar bone due to a mountain bike crash) I could operate a mouse but couldn’t manage the fluency of pencil work, which must say something about the creativity involved in pencil sketches.
